    President-Elect

(The term of the new federal Council takes effect on July 4, 2016)

Thank you to all the candidates who have put their names forward, and to those who supported me in my decision to seek the position of President. As President Elect, I want to thank Bob MacKie, who will continue to serve as Interim President until July the 4th, for all that he has done.

I ask that in choosing your Federal Council, you will look for those candidates who will work as a team, respect the will of the members, and who will put the party’s interests ahead of any personal agenda. To grow our party, we must operate with the utmost decorum. I will do my very best to create an atmosphere of trust and respect, as a requisite to achieving timely actions. We have so much to do, and there is little time for bickering or childlike tantrums.

I look forward to working with the soon to be elected Federal Council, staff, and Green Party supporters across the country. If nothing else, we came out of the last election as a respected positive force in our political system. I believe that, despite how they voted, Canadians knew that we had the best leader, best platform, and in most cases, the best candidates. We unquestionably set the bar high for the other parties and found them frequently changing positions and tactics to co-opt our well crafted policies, and our deep commitment to a more respectful, more democratic government.

It is upon these successes that we must build, and rebuild. We gained tremendous knowledge through the election process, building capacity, and strengthening relationships. I know that on our team, we understood that we had shared a rich experience. We woke up on October 20th proud of the campaign we ran, with unwavering belief in a better Canada. There is more passion, more joy, and more love in the Green Party. We are idealistic, boldly visionary, and yet still grounded in practical solutions which work. We carry on knowing that to do anything else is to leave the future to the destructive forces that currently hold power and sway. The old style parties represent the status quo; we are the party of hope!

    Ken’s Bio

Ken Melamed is a candidate for President and Finance Critic for the Green Party of Canada. He represented the Party in his home riding of West Vancouver Sunshine Coast Sea to Sky Country, in the 2015 federal election.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Ken came to Montreal in 1966, where he attended high school and CEGEP. Working in tourism, mountain rescue, non-profit, construction, and local government sectors, he contributed to its significant environmental, social, and economic, success’.

Ken was a founding director of the local environmental non-profit, A.W.A.R.E. and led as its president for 6 years before serving 3 terms as a municipal councillor.

Serving as mayor from 2005-2011, he oversaw the planning and delivery of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The Vancouver/Whistler games set a new benchmark for strategic planning and rigorous adherence to sustainability principles, largely due to the strength of Whistler 2020, the community’s long term sustainability vision, for which Melamed was a principle champion.

Ken Melamed est un candidat à la fonction de président et porte-parole en matière de finances pour le Parti Vert du Canada. Il représentait le parti dans sa circonscription de West Vancouver Sunshine Coast Sea to Sky Country, aux élections fédérales de 2015.
