Whistler 2020

Q :Whistler 2020 – is it adequate as is for our community’s guiding document?  What, if anything, needs updating?
A : Prior to t he OCP review the precepts in W2020 were reviewed and tested with the community. It required few changes and the OCP has re-enforced all of the directions. The community is well aligned on vision and policy; we now need a Resort Business Plan to focus effective actions.

Centre for Sustainability

There has been a lot of scrutiny placed on the Centre, and valid questions about the funding and value have been asked.

The community owned Whistler 2020 process which is run by the Centre is a powerful example of participatory democracy, community input, transparency and economic viability. It provides an open forum for ideas and action. The knowledge available to the business community generated from the monitoring and reporting is a valuable asset.

When Whistler adopted its award winning community vision it was important to establish the community’s ownership and guidance of the process. It was also quickly understood that the high level of interest from around the world in this innovative model provided some obligation to share the knowledge of the experience and an opportunity to contract for services in this highly specialized field.

The Centre is an effective instrument to generate profile for the community, and is a reputation builder for our community. The four year seed funding (not a penny from property tax) is finished. The Centre has successfully transitioned to a stand-alone enterprising non-profit.
